Anxiety disorder is growing in an alarming rate all over the world. Recurrent feelings of nervousness, hypertension, fear, and restlessness are common symptoms of anxiety. The constant feeling of anxiety is as unhealthy to the mind as it is to the body. Sometimes, severe anxiety leads to fatigue and nausea, whereas mild anxiety leads to constant agitation.

Anxiety disorders manifest in many ways and no two cases are ever the same. However, there are certain types of anxiety disorders that present frequently, which include the following:

  • Social anxiety disorder –The feeling of uneasiness amongst a large group of people. The thought of socializing and sharing a conversation with another person or a group of people might be uncomfortable to some individuals.
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) –It is the commonest type of anxiety. This is a severe disorder that involves long term feelings of nervousness and worrying from certain things and events that might not even seem stressful to a mentally sound person. Sometimes the trigger or stimulus is either absent or goes unnoticed.
  • Panic disorder – Sudden attacks of fear and trepidation due to a particular stressor or trigger is what panic disorder is all about. People with this disorder suffer from panic attacks. Panic attacks cause nausea, dizziness, arrhythmia, and suffocation. People having panic attacks are suffering from chronic anxiety disorder and must consult a medical professional immediately.
  • Phobia – - Intense terror triggered by a particular thing, event or feeling. Phobia causes hypertension and fear. A phobia can be of anything, it doesn't have to have a particular reason. It is irrational and unexplainable to people who do not have the particular phobia.
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) – People who keep having thoughts or performing actions that are repetitive can be characterized as suffering from OCD. These behaviours are irritable and intrusive to people around you but much more stressful to the patient.
  • Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)- This disorder usually occurs because of past trauma. This occurs in people who have gone through military combat, sexual or physical assault, and childhood traumas.
  • Separation anxiety disorder-Separation from a person, object or place causes high level of hypertension and irrationality

The causes of anxiety are confusing and complicated. They can occur due to various reasons like:

  • Genetics-Long family history of anxiety might be a cause
  • Environmental Factors-Stressful surroundings, bad relationships, unsatisfactory work
  • Medical Problems-Some medical conditions can cause anxiety. Side effects of some medicines also causes anxiety.
  • Substance Use-Excessive use of drugs and alcohol causes addiction that eventually leads to anxiety disorder. Withdrawal from the addiction also causes severe anxiety
  • Altitude-High altitude and long journeys causing motion sickness also cause severe anxiety.
  • Diagnosis

  • Diagnosis-Behavioural analysis by psychologists or medical diagnosis by a psychiatrist are the only diagnoses that are medically considered.
  • Counselling:
  • Therapy helps patients cope with their anxiety. Treatments like cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), and psychotherapies are effective. CBT lets you confront your fears and understand more about your problems with the help of some effective mental exercises.

    Psychotherapy and talk therapy include conversations with a therapist about your problems to figure out underlying causes.

  • Medication:
  • Medication with proper guidance by a psychiatrist can be effective for patients suffering from chronic anxiety disorder.

    Sometimes anxiety affects physiological factors like the blood pressure. Sometimes hormonal imbalances causes anxiety. Medication is crucial in these cases.

    Medications like benzodiazepines, serotonin reuptake inhibitors, tricyclics, and beta blockers are prescribed depending on the intensity of the disorder
